Gary Baseman :: The Door Is Always Open :: Skirball

Gary Baseman's captivating exhibit "THE DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN" had it's opening night April 25th at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.  Baseman, who has been an illustrator since the 80's, has drawn inspiration from his parents' home and their passing to make an inviting and unique exhibit featuring actual furniture from their house as well as family photos, home videos and other items that give the visitor a sense of magic and heritage.  This first major museum exhibition of his work is set up with 7 themed rooms showcasing paintings, figurines, textiles, sculptures, fashion, sketches and games.  The design of the home is so detailed even down to a mail slot where guests can leave messages after experiencing Baseman's world and inevitably becoming inspired to discover their own creative voices.  I was lucky to be invited along as Gary gave a tour to a group of art students and I was enlightened listening to him talk about his process and craft as he inspired us with realism about the profession and the surrealism of his imagination.  I VERY highly recommend visiting THE DOOR IS ALWAYS OPEN and enjoying all the devious details and impish creatures that recur in his stylized world.  Here is a large sampling of Gary Baseman's playfully pervasive work but don't miss seeing it in person.
The door is really only open until August 18th, 2013
